May 2014 Workshop

A special Thank You to Andculture who sponsored this workshop.

This was the first workshop where we started to get into the details of programming.  We covered several classic computer science concepts including:

  • Repeat Times
  • Repeat Until
  • IF statements
  • If Then Else statements

If you missed the workshop or didn't fully understand this, don't worry, you can catch up.

Important

First, make sure you are registered at code.org.  If you're not, sign up here.  Once you set up your own user ID, near the bottom there is an option to associate with a class or teacher; please enter our class code there, which is KNCKQD.

We started the code.org K-8 Introduction to Computer Science Course.  This is an online self paced class for kids in K through 8 and beyond.  It consists of a total of 20 "Stages" or lessons.

Here's what we covered:

  • Stage 1:  Introduction to Computer Science:  We skipped this.  This is something that can be done easily offline, and involves a fair bit of reading.
  • Stage 2:  The Maze:  This is what we covered in class.  We started and finished it, all 20 maze puzzles.  You should review all 20 of these and try to get the answer they are looking for.  Also play around with testing some other options to see if they work.
  • Stage 3:  Computational Thinking:  Similar to Stage 1, this can be done offline.  We recommend you do this yourself.
  • Stage 4:  Graph Paper Programming:  This can be done offline.  We recommend you do this yourself.
  • Stage 5:  The Artist:  We will start here in our next workshop.

So for anyone who missed workshop 2, to catch up, you should do all the above up to Stage 5.
